On the 17 of January, Prime Minister Theresa May unveiled 12 objectives the UK government will pursue in its negotiation of Brexit. The Prime Minister added that she wants ‘a new, positive and constructive partnership between Britain and the European Union.’ The 12 objectives are:
- Certainty
- Control of the UK’s laws
- Strengthening the UK Union. No decisions currently taken by devolved administrations will be removed
- Maintaining the common travel area with Ireland
- Control of immigration
- Guaranteeing the rights of EU nationals in the UK and the rights of UK nationals living in EU Member States. This is an early objective for the negotiations
- Protect the rights of workers and build on EU rights domestically
- Free trade with select European markets on a reciprocal basis
- New trade agreements with other countries
- To become one of the best places in the world for science and innovation
- Co-operation with EU member states in crime, terrorism and foreign affairs
- A smooth, orderly Brexit by a phased implementation of the new deal
