The Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) has issued a call for evidence concerning two important pieces of work it has been tasked with doing in relation to the UK’s future immigration system.
In June 2019, the Government commissioned the MAC to carry out an in depth analysis of potential future salary thresholds. This follows the publication of the immigration white paper in December 2018.
Last week, the MAC was also asked to look into the ‘Australian-style’ points-based system and how this may work for the UK (even though the UK’s immigration system for work and study visas has been operated by way of a Points Based System since 2008).
The MAC is therefore currently seeking evidence from stakeholders in relation to both pieces of work. The deadline for responses is 9am on 5 November 2019.
Although no official announcement has been made, it would appear that the focus of the future immigration system may have shifted from that set out by the previous government in the white paper to a new ‘Australian-style’ system as commissioned by the current government. Certainly, very little engagement appears to be happening at the moment.
