The Government has confirmed that the significant increases it has planned to the illegal working penalties will come into effect on 13 February 2024.
This follows on from the announcement in August last year that the penalties would triple.
The legislation, which confirmed the increases and timeframe, was accompanied by a new Code of practice on preventing illegal working. This also comes into effect on the same day.
The code of practice is the main document that employers should review carefully. This sets out the specific requirements they must follow to ensure that right to work checks will provide a defence, known as a statutory excuse. This will be needed if it is alleged that a worker does not have the right to work in the UK.
