Anyone planning to make an application for a UK spouse, fiancé or partner visa should be aware that a significant change to the financial requirement will come into force on 11 April 2024.
As previously explained, the UK government announced at the end of last year that the minimum income requirement would increase from £18,600 to £29,000.
A recent Ministerial Statement has confirmed when the change will take place. Knowing when this will happen will enable some couples, who may not meet the new requirement, to bring their plans forward and make an application before 11 April 2024.
The increase will not apply to those who already hold a visa under Appendix FM and who are on the five-year partner route before 11 April 2024. They will only need to meet the current £18,600 per year income threshold when they make a further application.
Statement of changes
A Statement of Changes to the Immigration Rules, which is the legal mechanism behind the change, will be laid before Parliament on 14 March 2024. This will amend Appendix FM, which is the formal name for the UK’s family immigration route.
Further increases
Going forward, the government intends to raise the minimum income requirement further in two more stages. This will ultimately lead to a minimum income requirement of £38,700. The dates for further increases have not yet been announced.
We would recommend that anyone who is planning to make an application does so sooner rather than later if they may not meet the increased income requirement.
